Zeroth Street

Lebanese artist and graphic designer Mariam Yakan lives on “Zeroth Street,” a space located somewhere between her beloved “Lebonia” and her temporary home in the “Metallic World.” Through whimsical illustrations and short graphic narratives, oil paintings dense with color and puppets carved with an ineffable expression that communicates both preserved innocence and lived sorrow, she grapples with and comments on the socio-political woes and everyday charms that keep her physically away from but emotionally attached to her beloved Lebanon. Her work has been featured in Samandal, the Lebanese-based comic magazine. She participated in an animation workshop in Prague as well as the Maisha Film Lab in Doha last year. She is in the process of creating a new website, but for now you can explore her work here.
